A tumor is an abnormal growth of cells or tissues some tumors are malignant or cancerous others are benign or noncancerous cancerous liver tumors can be fatal. Benign noncancerous liver tumors are common they do not spread to other areas of the body and they usually do not pose a serious health risk in fact in most cases benign liver tumors are not diagnosed because they cause no symptoms. The more common benign tumors of the liver include hemangioma hepatic adenoma focal nodular hyperplasia cysts lipoma fibroma leiomyoma none of these tumors are treated like liver. Benign liver tumors are relatively common most are asymptomatic but some cause hepatomegaly right upper quadrant discomfort or intraperitoneal hemorrhage most are detected incidentally on ultrasound or other scans in imaging tests of the liver and gallbladder
